Museo Popol Vuh

Outstanding Maya ceramics and a Dresden Codex facsimile

Address 6a Calle final, Zona 10, Guatemala City

The Museo Popol Vuh, on the campus of Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Zona 10, is one of the finest small Maya museums anywhere. Founded in the 1970s from the private collection of Jorge and Ella Castillo and now holding over 400 archaeological and colonial pieces, the museum is organised chronologically through the Preclassic, Classic, Postclassic and colonial periods. The strongest holdings are in Classic Maya polychrome ceramics — some of the finest painted vessels in the world — and there is a remarkable set of Postclassic funerary urns and a full facsimile of the Dresden Codex. Closed Sundays; entry is cheap and the museum is quiet and uncrowded.
