The Roatán Marine Park is the community-led NGO that manages the Sandy Bay–West End Marine Reserve, the stretch of reef along the island's most-dived north-west coast. The visitor centre and shop sit in the middle of West End and are worth a few minutes of any visitor's time.
The park's work is the reason the reef here is still in reasonable shape: mooring buoys (so boats don't anchor on coral), water-quality monitoring, lionfish culling, regular reef cleanups, and an education programme. The shop sells decent souvenirs and dive accessories; revenue funds the operation. Most dive shops add a $4 daily park fee to dive trips — paying it is the right thing to do.
