General Cepeda is a small town in southern Coahuila, about an hour west of Saltillo. Its streets are quiet and low-slung, but the desert around it is unusually rich: Cretaceous fossils, dinosaur footprints, petroglyph-covered rocks, and the remains of one of northern Mexico's great old haciendas all sit within reach.
The town itself is a short walk around the plaza, the portales, and the church of San Francisco de Asis. The reason to come is the wider landscape. Rincon Colorado is Mexico's first paleontological zone opened to the public, while Narigua spreads thousands of rock carvings across a rough hillside.
General Cepeda works best with a car, water, and a tolerance for sun and dust. Treat it as a compact fossil-and-desert day from Saltillo, not as a polished resort town.
