Monumento al Pez Vela

The vast steel sailfish leaping out of the seafront promenade is Manzanillo's signature monument and the unavoidable photo stop on the malecón. At 30 metres long it is one of the largest sculptures of a single fish anywhere; it stands on a small headland just south of the central plaza and is lit at night.

The promenade runs in either direction from the monument, with benches, palm trees and a steady stream of joggers and ice-cream sellers in the early evening. The view across to the Santiago Peninsula and back into the harbour is the easiest way to get a sense of the geography of the bay.

A story
The 30-metre sailfish on the malecón was unveiled in 1985 to mark Manzanillo's claim — disputed but defended every November in the international sailfish tournament — to be the *Capital Mundial del Pez Vela*, the World Sailfish Capital.
