Sportfishing

Manzanillo's claim to be the Capital Mundial del Pez Vela — the World Sailfish Capital — rests on the year-round sailfish, marlin, dorado, tuna and roosterfish that the boats here regularly land. Charter operators run from the marinas at Las Hadas and the inner harbour; expect to spend half a day at sea for a reasonable shot at a fish.

The big tournaments are in February and November, when crews come in from across Mexico and the US. Outside tournament weeks, prices for a half-day charter are reasonable by Pacific standards. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a strong stomach — the bay is generally calm but the open ocean beyond it is not.

A story
The annual international sailfish tournament in November regularly produces individual fish of 50 to 90 kg, and the record for the bay is over 130 kg. Most modern tournaments are catch-and-release; what the fishermen take home is a satellite tag and a photograph.
