Metropolitan Cathedral

Largest cathedral in the Americas, slowly sinking into ancient lake-bed

The largest cathedral in the Americas, built between 1573 and 1813 directly on the rubble of the Aztec sacred precinct. The long construction means the building mixes Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles in a single facade. Inside, the gilded Altar of the Kings is overwhelming. The whole cathedral is visibly tilting, slowly sinking into the soft lake-bed soil along with the rest of the historic centre — engineers have spent decades stabilising it.
