The valley of Mexico and the surrounding states are full of rewarding day trips. Teotihuacan, an hour north-east, is the essential one — the great pyramid city the Aztecs already considered ancient. The colonial silver town of Taxco hangs off a steep hillside three hours south. Puebla has its baroque churches and mole; Cuernavaca, "the city of eternal spring", makes an easy weekend escape from the altitude.
