Templo de San Felipe Neri is a restrained early Baroque church in the historic centre, founded by the Jesuits in the late 16th century and completed in 1610. The plainness does not last once you step inside: the church holds a rich collection of colonial religious art, gilded altarpieces and sculpture.
The attached gallery is the reason to linger. Its paintings trace early Mexican sacred art across several centuries, including works tied to the Jesuits before their expulsion from the Spanish Empire.
