UNAM's 1950s modernist campus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The central campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico — UNAM, the largest university in Latin America — was built between 1949 and 1952 by a collective of more than sixty Mexican architects led by Mario Pani and Enrique del Moral. The whole campus was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 as a unique synthesis of mid-century modernism and Mexican muralism.

The high points are the four-sided mosaic-tiled façade of the Central Library, covered in Juan O'Gorman's allegorical panels of pre-Hispanic and colonial Mexico; the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, built for the 1968 Olympics with a Diego Rivera mosaic on the front; and the Rectoría tower, with David Alfaro Siqueiros's projecting sculptural mural. Reach it by metro to Universidad station or pesero to CU; the central campus can be walked in 90 minutes.
