Mercado de Dulces

The Mercado de Dulces — Candy Market — is one of those places that feels too good to be true: an entire market dedicated to the traditional sweets for which Morelia is famous throughout Mexico. Stall after stall is stacked with candied fruits, cajeta (thick goat-milk caramel), ate (a dense fruit paste often served with cheese), cocadas (coconut sweets), and dozens of other confections made to recipes that haven't changed in generations.

The market runs along the side of the Palacio Clavijero and extends a little into the adjacent streets. It's busy with locals and tourists alike, and the vendors are generally good-humoured about sampling. The prices are reasonable and the goods travel well — ates and cajetas in sealed jars make excellent gifts. If you want to try them in situ, the cafe area at the entrance lets you have a coffee alongside a selection of sweets.
