Santuario de Guadalupe

Morelia sanctuary with a restrained exterior and a lavishly decorated polychrome interior.

The Santuario de Guadalupe is one of Morelia's best surprises: outside, it looks like a handsome but fairly sober church; inside, the walls and ceiling erupt into dense colour, gilding, and floral plasterwork. It is a short walk east of the historic centre, usually paired with the aqueduct and the Calzada de Fray Antonio de San Miguel.

The interior is the reason to come. Give your eyes a minute to adjust before trying to take it all in, because the decoration is almost theatrical in its density. It is still an active church, so visit respectfully and avoid wandering through during Mass.
