Playa del Carmen has a lively bar scene centred on Quinta Avenida and the beach clubs. The main avenue has terrace bars that stay open late; the beach clubs (La Santanera, Fusion, and others) double as bars and nightclubs in the evening. Tequila, mezcal, and rum-based cocktails are the drinks of choice. The town's nightlife is generally more relaxed and genuinely Mexican in character than Cancun's resort strip, though the central streets can get crowded on weekends.
