Playa del Carmen is the base for exploring the Riviera Maya — diving the reefs around Cozumel, snorkelling cenotes, visiting Tulum's ruins, and day trips to Chichén Itzá. Within town, Quinta Avenida and the beach are the main activities. The town's own beach is decent but the main draws are offshore and in the jungle inland.
