Playa del Carmen's town beach — white sand and clear turquoise Caribbean water — is pleasant for swimming but largely occupied by beach clubs with sunbeds and paid entry. The free public sections are found by walking north or south of the main strip. The best diving and snorkelling is offshore around Cozumel's reefs or in the cenotes south of town rather than on the town beach itself. Xcaret, about 10 km south, is a large eco-park built around a coastal inlet with underground rivers, reef snorkelling, and turtle conservation; it is expensive but impressive.
