The island of Cozumel, a 30-minute ferry crossing from the main pier in Playa del Carmen, has some of the best coral reef diving in the Caribbean — the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs along its western coast, with extraordinary visibility and biodiversity. Palancar Reef and the Canyons are among the most celebrated dive sites. The island also has beaches, a small town (San Miguel) with restaurants and bars, and is easily visited as a day trip. Ferries run frequently from the passenger pier on the beach in Playa del Carmen.
