Playa del Carmen Beach

White Caribbean sand stretching north and south from the ferry pier, with free public access beyond the beach clubs

The beach at Playa del Carmen is genuinely beautiful — fine white quartz sand, clear turquoise water, and views across to Cozumel on clear days. The stretch directly in front of town is largely carved up by beach clubs that charge for sunbeds and umbrellas, but free public beach is available by walking north past the beach clubs toward Mamitas Beach or south into the Playacar residential development.

The water is warm (around 26–28°C year-round), calm inside the reef, and good for swimming. Snorkelling from the beach is limited — the coral reef system runs much further offshore. For quality marine life, the cenotes inland or the reefs around Cozumel are the real destinations. The beach is best used as a place to cool down between excursions rather than as the main event.
