The pedestrian spine of Playa del Carmen, Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) runs for several kilometres through the town, lined with restaurants, bars, boutiques, jewellery shops, and street food stalls. It is the social heart of the town — lively from late morning until well past midnight. The northern end near the ferry pier is the most touristy; further south the street becomes more local in character. The prices on the main avenue are significantly higher than on the parallel side streets, where the same goods are available for less.
