Río Secreto Underground River

A guided wade through a spectacular cave system with stalactites, stalagmites, and crystalline underground pools

Río Secreto is a privately run underground cave tour about 20 km south of Playa del Carmen, more intimate and less crowded than the big cenote sites near Tulum. The tour involves wading through chest-deep water and swimming short sections in a headlamp through chambers packed with stalactites, columns, and crystal formations. The system extends well beyond the tourist section — parts of it have not been fully explored.

Tours are guided, last about two hours, and are limited to small groups. Wet suits and helmet lamps are provided. The cave is a serious cave system, not a sanitised attraction — portions are genuinely dark and confined. It is one of the most memorable experiences in the Riviera Maya and far less visited than Dos Ojos or Gran Cenote. Book in advance during peak season.

A story
The cave was discovered accidentally in 2004 by a local landowner cutting jungle trails. When explorers entered they found a river system extending over 10 km, with some chambers completely undisturbed and still displaying intact speleothems that had grown for tens of thousands of years. Parts of the cave are now certified as among the most scientifically significant cave formations in the Americas.
