Parque La Ceiba is a useful antidote to Playa del Carmen's beach-and-bar version of itself. Run by Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México, it is a community park built around native vegetation, environmental education, children's activities, workshops, and weekend markets rather than another polished tourist strip.
It is most rewarding when something is on: a Saturday tianguis, a craft event, a class, or a small performance. Even without a programme, it is a good stop for families or anyone who wants a quieter, greener hour inland from Quinta Avenida.
