Cathedral of Santiago Apóstol

The Cathedral of Santiago Apóstol dominates Boaco's central park and is the most imposing building in the city. Built in the colonial style with a pale façade and twin bell towers, it sits above the main square and is visible from much of the surrounding town. Inside, the proportions are simple and the decoration modest — this is a working parish church, not a showpiece.

The square in front of the cathedral is the social centre of Boaco, with benches, trees, and the inevitable cluster of mototaxi drivers. In the evening it fills with families and vendors. If you arrive at dusk, the cathedral's towers catch the last light nicely.

A story
The original church on this site was built in the 17th century by Spanish colonists who dedicated it to the Apostle Santiago — the same saint whose image, mounted on horseback, became the emblem of Spanish conquest throughout the Americas. The present cathedral dates to the 20th century, but the patronal feast of Santiago on July 25 is still the biggest celebration in Boaco's calendar, featuring traditional costumes, horse processions, and folk dances.
