Boaco sits at around 400 metres elevation in the Nicaraguan highlands, which moderates the heat compared to Managua and the Pacific coast. Temperatures are comfortable year-round, rarely exceeding 30°C and cooling noticeably at night.
The dry season runs from November to April. During these months the surrounding hills turn brown and the roads are easier to travel. The rainy season runs from May to October, bringing afternoon downpours that turn the cattle country green. Roads in the surrounding department can become difficult after heavy rain, but the city itself is accessible year-round.
The main event in Boaco's calendar is the Fiesta de Santiago on 25 July, celebrating the city's patron saint. Horse processions, traditional dances, and folk costumes fill the streets for several days around the feast day — if you are in Nicaragua in late July, it is worth timing a visit around it.
