Casa Pilar Defilló

A small, restored nineteenth-century townhouse a couple of blocks west of Plaza Colón, the childhood home of the woman whose son became one of the great cellists of the twentieth century. The house now operates as a small museum dedicated to Casals and to the musical life of Mayagüez.

Worth a stop for anyone interested in classical music or the city's quieter cultural history. Hours are limited — check before going.

A story
Pilar Defilló was the Mayagüez-born mother of the cellist Pablo Casals — perhaps the greatest cellist of the twentieth century. Casals visited Puerto Rico for the first time in 1955, fell in love with the island, settled there, and founded the Casals Festival of classical music that still runs annually in San Juan.
