Lake Havasu City

Colorado River city on Lake Havasu, known for the relocated 1831 London Bridge.

Lake Havasu City sits on the eastern bank of Lake Havasu, a reservoir on the Colorado River at the Arizona-California border. The city is known primarily for two things: spring break and the London Bridge. The bridge is real — the original 1831 London Bridge was purchased by the city's founder Robert McCulloch in 1968, dismantled stone by stone, and reassembled here. It now spans a channel that was dug beneath it, connecting the mainland to a small island and creating the English Village, a tourist development with shops and restaurants in a vaguely British style.

The lake itself is the main draw for most visitors. Lake Havasu offers warm-weather water sports nearly year-round — boating, jet-skiing, swimming, and fishing for striped bass and catfish. The stretch of Arizona coastline along the lake is dotted with beaches and campgrounds. Parker Strip, to the south, is particularly popular in summer.

Spring break brings crowds from universities across the Southwest; if you are not coming for that scene, late autumn through early spring is a quieter and still-warm time to visit. Temperatures in summer regularly exceed 40°C (104°F), which even the most devoted boater has to factor into their plans.

Things to Do

Lake Havasu City is essentially a lake town — the lake is the attraction, and most visitors come to be on the water. The London Bridge provides the historic footnote, but the real draw is sun, warm water, and 60 kilometres of Colorado River reservoir flanked by red-rock desert. Most activities revolve around boats, jet skis, and beaches, with State Park trails providing a quieter alternative.

When to Go

October through April is the sweet spot — temperatures hover between 20–25°C, the lake is warm enough to swim, and the jet-ski traffic is manageable. Winter brings a steady population of snowbirds from Canada and the northern United States who fill the campgrounds and give the town a lively low-key atmosphere.

Spring break (late February through March) is frenetic — the Strip around London Bridge becomes a party zone for university students from Arizona State, UCLA, and schools across the Southwest. The lake fills with boats and the noise is considerable. Come for this or avoid it entirely depending on your preference.

Summer (June through September) is genuinely brutal — temperatures regularly exceed 43°C (110°F). Even serious boaters limit their time on the water to morning hours. If you must come in summer, arrive at dawn, be on the water by 7am, and retreat to air conditioning by noon. The evenings cool to a still-hot 30°C.
