Safford sits in Arizona's Gila Valley, below the PinaleƱo Mountains and the long rise of Mount Graham. The town itself is practical and low-key, but the surrounding desert and mountains give it enough substance for a real stop between Tucson, the White Mountains, and the New Mexico line.
The best days here are outdoors. Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area protects a rare desert river corridor northeast of town, while Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area mixes off-road sand with hot soaking tubs in a very Arizona way.
Safford also has an astronomy angle. Discovery Park is the visitor centre for Mount Graham International Observatory tours, giving travellers a public route into one of the state's more unusual scientific landscapes.
This is not a polished resort town. Come for desert water, mountain roads, hot springs, and a sky full of telescopes.
