Two pursuits dominate Livermore: wine and science. The wine country along Tesla Road and Mines Road has over 50 family wineries — Concannon and Wente, both from 1883, are the historical anchors — and is far less crowded than Napa or Sonoma.
The science side is the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, closed to the public but with a free Discovery Center, and the famous Centennial Light at Fire Station 6 — the world's longest-burning lightbulb, lit since 1901. Downtown Livermore itself is small, walkable and pleasant, with the Bankhead Theater anchoring an unexpectedly lively First Street.
