Monopoly in the Park

Monopoly in the Park, in Guadalupe River Park near the Children's Discovery Museum, is the world's largest permanent Monopoly board — a 30 by 30 foot concrete grid of properties, complete with oversized dice and player pieces. The board is open for play during park hours; group games can be booked in advance through the nonprofit that runs it.

The board was the brainchild of San Jose resident Tony Cook, who lobbied for years before persuading Hasbro to license it. Even if you do not actually sit down to play a four-hour game with the oversized tokens, the board makes a good photo stop and pairs naturally with a visit to the Children's Discovery Museum next door.

A story
The board was certified by Guinness World Records as the largest permanent Monopoly board in the world. Players use vinyl banners as cards, lawn dice the size of footstools, and pieces that look like overgrown Monopoly tokens. The board is laid out on the ground with concrete tiles in Discovery Meadow, and games can be reserved through the local nonprofit that maintains it.
