Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum holds the largest collection of ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, and Assyrian artefacts on the West Coast. The collection is housed in a complex of buildings designed in a striking Neo-Egyptian style, set in Rosicrucian Park in the Rose Garden neighbourhood northwest of downtown. The museum owns genuine mummies, human and animal, alongside sarcophagi, amulets, canopic jars, and a full-scale reproduction of an Egyptian rock tomb that you can walk through.

The museum is not widely known outside San Jose, which means it is rarely crowded. For anyone with an interest in ancient Egypt, it is a genuine surprise — the collection is substantial and well-presented. Rosicrucian Park itself is beautifully maintained and worth a walk regardless of whether you go into the museum.

A story
The Rosicrucian Order built its North American headquarters in San Jose in the 1920s, choosing a Neo-Egyptian architectural style and importing genuine Egyptian artefacts to fill it. The collection includes the largest grouping of ancient Egyptian objects on display on the West Coast — an odd fact for a city that did not exist when ancient Egypt did.
