Norton Museum of Art

South Florida's best art museum, with strong Chinese, American, and contemporary collections

The Norton is the only serious art museum between Miami and Orlando, and a genuine surprise for a city of West Palm Beach's size. The collection has three clear strengths: Chinese ceramics and jades from the Han dynasty onward, early 20th-century American painting (O'Keeffe, Hopper, Davis), and a growing photographic and contemporary holdings including Warhol, Lichtenstein and Sherman.

The 2019 Norman Foster expansion is a building in itself worth visiting — a long glass-fronted hall under a hovering canopy and a banyan tree in the central courtyard. Allow at least two hours; longer if a major touring exhibition is in. Closed Tuesdays. The free admission on Friday evenings is popular with locals. 1451 South Olive Avenue.

A story
The museum was founded in 1941 by steel-magnate Ralph Norton, whose private collection — Chinese jades, Renaissance bronzes, and a strong selection of early 20th-century American painters — formed the seed of what is now one of the largest art museums in the southeastern United States. The Norman Foster expansion in 2019 doubled the gallery space and added the now-iconic glass-and-steel atrium.
