Manuel's Tavern

A wood-panelled, low-ceilinged neighbourhood tavern on North Highland Avenue, owned by the same family since 1956 and the unofficial political clubhouse of Atlanta Democrats for decades. Photographs of presidents, governors, and city councillors cover the walls.

The food is bar food — burgers, wings, fish and chips — but the place is the point. Open until late and crowded after Falcons or Braves games. A working bar, not a tourist stop, which is exactly why it is worth visiting.

A story
Manuel's was opened in 1956 by Manuel Maloof, a Lebanese-American grocer who became an influential Democratic politician — the bar has been the centre of progressive Atlanta politics for almost seventy years. Jimmy Carter held planning meetings here for his presidential campaign; the back room still contains the original wood-panelled booth where he sat.
