Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park

The two-block park in the Sweet Auburn district, around the birth home and tomb of Martin Luther King Jr., is one of the most important civil rights sites in the country. It includes King's 1894 birth-home (visitable by tour ticket only — book early), the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where he was co-pastor with his father, the King Center museum, and the reflecting pool that holds his tomb.

The Visitor Center exhibits and the original Ebenezer auditorium together give a thorough account of King's life and the wider movement. The site is run by the National Park Service and admission is free; only the birth-home tour requires a same-day timed ticket.

A story
King's tomb, on a small island in a reflecting pool beside Ebenezer Baptist Church, carries the line 'Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty I'm free at last' — quoting a slave spiritual that he used to close his 1963 'I Have a Dream' speech. His wife Coretta Scott King is buried beside him.
