Bonaventure Cemetery

Savannah's famous riverside cemetery of live oaks, sculpture, and Southern Gothic atmosphere.

Bonaventure Cemetery is one of Savannah's great atmospheric sights, a broad riverside cemetery where live oaks, Spanish moss, marble sculpture, and family plots turn mourning into landscape design. It became famous well beyond Georgia, but it still feels local: quiet roads, names from Savannah history, and monuments that reward patient looking.

Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and the heat is less blunt. Bonaventure is not in the tight historic district, so plan transport, then give yourself time to wander without rushing from grave to grave. The appeal is the whole setting as much as any single monument.
