Getting Around Savannah

The historic district is compact and entirely walkable. Most major attractions, restaurants, and squares are within easy walking distance of each other. Wear comfortable shoes — the brick and cobblestone streets are uneven.

On foot and by bike

Walking is the best way to experience Savannah's squares and architecture. The grid layout makes navigation easy. Bikes are available to rent from several shops in the historic district.

DOT Trolley

The free DOT (Department of Transportation) shuttle runs through the historic district, stopping at major attractions. It's a useful backup when you don't want to walk, though routes and schedules should be checked locally as they change seasonally.

Car

Parking in the historic district is limited. Most visitors find it easier to leave the car at their hotel and walk or take a rideshare within the district. A car is essential if you're heading to Tybee Island (about 18 miles east) or exploring outlying areas.
