Things to Do

Savannah's main attraction is the city itself — its 22 historic squares, lined with live oaks draped in Spanish moss and surrounded by Federal and Regency townhouses, are among the most beautiful urban spaces in America. Simply walking the squares is the essential Savannah experience.

Forsyth Park, at the southern end of the historic district, is a large and lovely park centered on an ornate cast-iron fountain. It's a local gathering place and good for a morning walk.

The Savannah History Museum and the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum are each worth an hour. Fort Pulaski, about 15 miles east on the way to Tybee Island, is an impressive Civil War fortification with well-preserved earthworks and exhibits explaining the siege of 1862.

Tybee Island, Savannah's beach, is 18 miles east on US 80 — a narrow barrier island with a relaxed, low-key atmosphere. Better for a day trip than a standalone beach destination, but pleasant enough for swimming in summer.
