Day Trips in Savannah

Day trips abound from scenic Savannah, Georgia. Within two hours you can be in some of the most charming places in the south. Here are a few of the more interesting locations to visit from Savannah.

Tybee Island, Georgia (25 minutes)

Just 17 miles from Savannah is picturesque Tybee Island. You can stop at Fort Pulaski to see the alligators in the moat, or head to Tybrisa Pier for some fishing. The Tybee Island Lighthouse can be toured with a combined ticket to the Lighthouse Museum and the restored homes of the old lighthouse keepers. Visit the western beach for spectacular sunsets or book yourself a dolphin tour. If you have young children they're sure to get a kick out of the Marine Science Center. And whatever you do, don't miss out on a meal at The Crab Shack.

Beaufort, South Carolina (1 hour)

Located 42 miles from Savannah is Beaufort, South Carolina, where you can see the first African Baptist Church in America or visit the Old Sheldon Church ruins. Huntington Island State Park is a beautiful place, especially in the autumn. Visit the Parris Island Museum and Beaufort Museum, or just hop onto a Southern Rose Buggy Tour to learn a bit more about the area's history. Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park is another lovely place to pass the time.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina (1 hour)

Some of the best golfing to be had is just 45 miles away on the scenic island of Hilton Head. Visit Harbor Town Golf at Sea Pines Resort or Palmetto Dunes. If you have kids, they're sure to enjoy Pirate's Island miniature golf. For those who wish to be pampered, make a stop at All About Me day spa. Children will love The Sandbox interactive museum, while adults will enjoy the winery. You can also take a boat tour for fishing or exploring.

Brunswick, Georgia (1 hour 20 minutes)

Brunswick is just 70 miles away and offers boat tours, golfing, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding and bird watching. If you feel like a bit of gambling you can book a trip on the floating casino cruise. Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation is a beautiful park that will leave you feeling relaxed or exhilarated, depending on the activities you decide to pursue while there.

Saint Simons Island, Georgia (1 hour 30 minutes)

80 miles from Savannah is another island known as St. Simons. Here you can tour the breathtaking Christ Church or visit Fort Frederica and the Coastal Encounters Nature Center. A favorite among tourists is what happens after nightfall, however. Join the St. Simons ghost walk and learn about the past legends of the island, culminating in a stop at the haunted lighthouse.

Jekyll Island, Georgia (1 hour 45 minutes)

Finally, you can visit Jekyll Island just 90 miles from Savannah. Here you can tour the Georgia Sea Turtle Center or the Tidelands Nature Center. Golfing is a popular pastime in the area, and you can also visit the local museum. For a bit of summer fun, though, be sure to stop at the Summer Waves Water Park.
