Chippewa Square

The square where Forrest Gump's bench scene was filmed

One of the most visited of Savannah's 22 historic squares, Chippewa Square is dominated by a bronze statue of James Oglethorpe, Georgia's founder, looking south toward the Spanish settlements he spent his career fighting back. The square is well-proportioned and surrounded by handsome Federal-era buildings.

Most visitors know it as the filming location for the park bench scenes in Forrest Gump, though the actual bench used in the film is now in the Savannah History Museum a few blocks away. The filming connection aside, Chippewa is worth visiting on its own terms: the scale is right, the shade is generous, and the surrounding streetscape is among the better-preserved in the district.
