Old Greyhound Bus Station

A perfectly preserved 1938 Streamline Moderne bus terminal on Lamar Street, now adapted for office use but with its curved glass blocks and chrome trim intact. The building is a small monument to one of the pivotal moments of the civil rights movement.

There is no museum here; this is a building to look at from the outside and read a plaque. The story is told properly across the street at the Civil Rights Museum.

A story
More than 300 Freedom Riders were arrested at this Streamline Moderne station in 1961 for attempting to use the whites-only waiting room. Many were sent to Parchman Farm, the brutal state penitentiary, where they were held in maximum-security cells alongside death-row inmates.
