Old Capitol Museum

The Greek Revival Old State Capitol on State Street served as the seat of Mississippi government from 1839 to 1903. It is now a museum about the political and legislative history of the state — the secession debates, Reconstruction, the long resistance to civil rights.

The building itself is the most architecturally distinguished on the Jackson skyline. Free admission, and the exhibits are good.

A story
The Ordinance of Secession was passed in this building on 9 January 1861, making Mississippi the second state to leave the Union. A century later it was abandoned and nearly demolished — the campaign to save it created the state's first historic preservation movement.
