Benton Park sits south of Soulard, centred on a small park of the same name. It was the heart of the German immigrant city in the 19th century — the Lemp brewery dominated the eastern edge, and the surrounding streets are still lined with the brick German-style townhouses of the brewers' workers. The neighbourhood has been gentle without the boom-and-bust pattern of nearby districts.
The Lemp Mansion sits on the eastern boundary; the Venice Cafe is a few blocks east. Cherokee Street, the Latino commercial strip, runs through the southern part of the neighbourhood. It's the right place to stay if you want walkable bars and restaurants but with a quieter residential feel than Soulard a few blocks north.
