Grant's Farm

Free wildlife park on Ulysses S Grant's former property, with the Clydesdales

Grant's Farm covers 281 acres of land that Ulysses S Grant farmed before the Civil War, on what was then his father-in-law's estate just south of the city. It later became the country residence of the Busch family — the brewers — who opened it to the public in the 1950s as a free wildlife park.

A tram tour winds through paddocks of bison, deer, and zebras; the central Tier Garten holds the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales stables, exotic birds, and goats that visitors can feed. Admission is free, but parking costs around $15 and the inevitable beer-and-pretzels in the Bauernhof courtyard is part of the experience. Hours are limited from October through April.
