Havre is a working town on Montana's Hi-Line, close to the Canadian border and surrounded by a lot of open prairie. It is not pretty in the mountain-resort sense, and that helps. The place feels like railroads, wheat, long highways, winter wind, and history that has not been polished smooth.
The reason to stop is the unusual pair of Havre Beneath the Streets and Wahkpa Chu'gn Buffalo Jump. One takes you into a recreated underground business district that grew after a fire; the other puts you at an archaeological site where bison bones and tools remain in place.
Add the small H. Earl Clack Museum or seasonal Fort Assinniboine, and Havre clears the bar for travelers already crossing northern Montana. It is not worth a long detour for everyone, but it is a good Hi-Line day if you like frontier, railroad, and Plains history.
