Lewistown sits close to the geographic centre of Montana, in a wide basin wrapped by the Judith, Snowy, Moccasin, Belt, and Highwood ranges. It is a small town, but the setting gives it more weight than its population suggests.
This is not the Montana of big-name national parks. Lewistown is quieter: Big Spring Creek runs right through town, the Central Montana Museum is stronger than expected, and the Limekiln Trail climbs quickly into the Judith Mountains.
The town works best for travelers who like the in-between parts of the West: wheat country, old brick storefronts, fishing access, and long views. If the seasonal Charlie Russell Chew Choo is running, it turns Lewistown from a pleasant stop into a full evening.
