The Pioneer Center is one of the most distinctive buildings in Reno: a 1967 performing-arts theatre crowned by a golden anodised geodesic dome 145 feet across, looking somewhere between a piece of 1960s utopian architecture and a giant Christmas tree ornament. Inside is a 1,500-seat auditorium home to the Reno Philharmonic, the Nevada Opera, and a roster of touring Broadway productions.
Visit a performance if you can — the acoustics are reportedly very good — or simply walk by after dark, when the dome is uplit and visible from blocks away. The fountains and small square in front are a pleasant short stop on a downtown walk.
