Mt Rose is Reno's most practical mountain-sports escape, sitting high in the Carson Range between the city and Lake Tahoe. In winter it functions as a real ski area rather than a token city hill, with the advantage of being much closer to Reno than many Tahoe resorts.
The mountain is also part of the scenic transition from desert basin to alpine forest. Even if you are not skiing, the drive toward Mount Rose and Tahoe helps explain Reno's outdoor appeal beyond casinos and downtown events.
