National Bowling Stadium

World's largest bowling-only facility, with 78 lanes and an IMAX screen above

The National Bowling Stadium is one of those Reno oddities that turns out to be exactly what the name says. Opened in 1995 and four storeys tall, the building contains 78 championship tournament lanes along a single 440-foot row — the largest bowling-only facility in the world — plus a giant suspended ball-shaped IMAX-style theatre over the entrance.

It is primarily a tournament venue and is not always open for casual play; check the schedule. But even passing by, it is worth a look from the outside: the polished steel ball entrance and the giant pin-shaped sculpture have made it one of downtown Reno's stranger landmarks. Tours are sometimes available; ask at the lobby.

A story
Bill Murray bowled three consecutive strikes during the filming of Kingpin (1996) on the stadium's main lanes — a feat the building's staff still occasionally bring up. The Coen Brothers were also reportedly considered for filming The Big Lebowski here before settling on Los Angeles.
