The Nevada Museum of Art is Nevada's only AAM-accredited art museum and a serious surprise in a city dominated by casino entertainment. The 2003 building by Phoenix architect Will Bruder is itself a draw — a sloping, fractured volume clad in dark zinc that recalls the geological cliffs of the Great Basin.
The permanent collection focuses on the relationship between art and the natural environment, with strong holdings of contemporary land art from the American West (including the Center for Art + Environment archive of Robert Smithson and others). Temporary exhibitions are unusually ambitious for a city Reno's size. The rooftop sculpture terrace gives a fine view back across downtown. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
