New Jersey State House

The New Jersey State House on West State Street is a working legislature — the Senate and General Assembly still meet here — which makes free public tours more interesting than the average historic building. Guided tours run on weekdays and take in the legislative chambers, the governor's reception rooms, and the portrait collection.

The exterior dome is visible from much of central Trenton. The surrounding blocks include the State Museum and the Old Barracks, making this the natural starting point for a day of sightseeing.

A story
The current State House is the second-oldest continuously operating state capitol in the United States — only Maryland's predates it. The building has been expanded and rebuilt so many times since 1792 that almost nothing of the original survives, but the golden dome has anchored Trenton's skyline since 1845.
