The Great White is a wooden coaster on Surfside Pier that opened in 1996. It is unusual on two counts: its frame is partly steel-supported to handle the seaside salt air, and its first drop runs underneath the boardwalk before climbing back over the rides. The ride is short — about a minute and a half — but the views across the beach from the lift hill are excellent.
The line is shortest in the morning and after a heavy summer thunderstorm clears the boardwalk. Single-rider seating is sometimes offered when the queue is long.
