The Race of Gentlemen

The Race of Gentlemen — TROG — is a vintage drag race held each June on the firm low-tide sand of Wildwood Beach. Pre-war hot rods and flathead-engined motorcycles, all with period-correct livery, race in pairs down a marked strip while spectators line the boardwalk and dunes. The dress code among participants leans hard into 1940s leather, denim, and grease.

Tickets and grandstand seating sell out months in advance, but watching from the boardwalk and outer edges is free. Even if you have no interest in cars, the event is a strange, immersive piece of theatre — and one of the few weekends each year when Wildwood feels genuinely odd rather than just nostalgic.

A story
TROG (The Race of Gentlemen) was started by motorcycle enthusiast Mel Stultz in 2012 as a tribute to the pre-war beach racing that gave birth to American hot-rod culture. Only pre-1947 cars and pre-1953 motorcycles are allowed on the sand.
