Mansfield is a north-central Ohio city with one attraction strong enough to pull travellers off the interstate: the Ohio State Reformatory, the huge former prison made famous by The Shawshank Redemption. That landmark gives the city a sharper identity than many towns of similar size.
There is enough around it for a full day. Pair the reformatory with Kingwood Center Gardens, a walk through the compact downtown carousel district, and, if you have a car, Malabar Farm State Park in the rolling countryside southeast of town.
Mansfield is not glamorous, and that is part of the appeal. Its best stops are practical, odd, and very Ohio: a castle-like prison, a hand-carved carousel, a formal garden, and a literary farm landscape within easy reach.
