Henryetta

East-central Oklahoma city shaped by coal and oil, with unpretentious downtown streets and Troy Aikman hometown lore

Henryetta sits in the rolling hills of east-central Oklahoma, a small city of about 6,000 people that punches above its weight in local character. The town was built on coal mining and oil, and that hardscrabble heritage still shows in its unpretentious downtown. Henryetta is perhaps best known as the hometown of football legend Troy Aikman, who grew up here before leading the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories.

The surrounding countryside is green and hilly by Oklahoma standards, with good fishing at nearby Lake Henryetta and Nichols Lake. Highway 75 runs through town, making it an easy stop on the drive between Tulsa and McAlester. The annual Henryetta Freedom Festival each July is a proper small-town celebration with parades, carnival rides, and fireworks.

If you are passing through, stop at one of the local barbecue spots or the Mexican restaurants along Main Street. Henryetta is not a destination in itself, but it is a genuine piece of small-town Oklahoma with friendly people and cheap gas.

Getting There

Henryetta is on US Highway 75, about 55 miles south of Tulsa and 25 miles north of McAlester. It is an easy stop on the drive between Tulsa and southeastern Oklahoma. The town sits just off the Indian Nation Turnpike interchange, which makes it a convenient fuel and food stop for travellers heading south from Tulsa toward the Ouachita Mountains.

There is no commercial air service or intercity bus. The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Tulsa International Airport (TUL), roughly an hour's drive north. A car is essential for visiting Henryetta.

Things to Do

Henryetta's appeal is in its authenticity as a working small town rather than in conventional tourist attractions. The nearby lakes offer good fishing and a quiet afternoon; the downtown has the compact brick architecture typical of early 20th-century Oklahoma coal towns. The big annual event is the Freedom Festival in early July — a genuine small-town celebration with parade, carnival, and fireworks over the lake.
